Neil Patel
British-American digital marketing entrepreneur — co-founder of Crazy Egg and KISSmetrics, founder of NP Digital, owner of Ubersuggest, and a New York Times bestselling author.
Overview
Neil Patel is a British-American digital marketer, author and serial entrepreneur. He is best known for co-founding the analytics companies Crazy Egg and KISSmetrics, for building one of the most-read marketing blogs at neilpatel.com, and for founding the global agency NP Digital. In 2017 he acquired the keyword tool Ubersuggest and rebuilt it into a widely used freemium SEO platform.
Publications including Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur and Inc. have named him among the most influential people in marketing. His approach is built on publishing large volumes of free, practical content and using it as the top of a funnel for software and agency services.
Early life & background
Patel was born on 14 April 1985 in London, England, to Indian parents, and moved with his family to Orange County, California as a young child. He became interested in computers and the web as a teenager and ran small ventures — including a web-hosting reseller and a refurbished-hardware business — while still in school, which is where he first learned online marketing by trying to get customers.
Frustrated that his early sites were not getting traffic, he taught himself SEO and paid search, and began consulting for other companies while still a student.
Career
Crazy Egg (co-founded c. 2005–2006). With business partner Hiten Shah, Patel launched Crazy Egg, a tool that visualises where visitors click and scroll using heatmaps — one of the early popular conversion-optimisation products.
KISSmetrics. The pair went on to build KISSmetrics, a person-level analytics platform for tracking customer behaviour across sessions. Alongside it Patel ran Quick Sprout, a blog and course business teaching traffic and conversion tactics.
neilpatel.com & Ubersuggest. He scaled his personal blog into a major content operation covering SEO, content marketing and paid media. In 2017 he bought Ubersuggest and expanded it from a simple keyword generator into a full SEO suite with a free tier, used to attract users to his other products.
NP Digital (co-founded 2017). With Mike Kamo, Patel founded NP Digital, a performance-marketing agency that has grown internationally and won industry “agency of the year” recognition. He also co-hosts the long-running Marketing School podcast with Eric Siu.
Writing. Patel is a New York Times bestselling author. His books include Hustle: The Power to Charge Your Life with Money, Meaning, and Momentum (2016, co-authored) and The Definitive Guide to Growth Hacking.
